Actress Cynthia Nixon just announced her candidacy for governor of New York on Twitter and, as super-fans of Miranda Hobbes, we couldn’t be any prouder.
Everyone knows her for the iconic character she played in HBO’s “Sex and the City” from 1998 to 2004, but, much like in the series, she’s also a devoted New Yorker. If she manages to win against incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming September Democratic primary, she would stand a chance to become the state’s first female governor.
Nixon might not have any experience as a politician but she is the recipient of a Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award for her work as a LGBTQ advocate and is an outspoken activist who has criticised Cuomo on many policies, from the state of NYC’s transport system to education policies.
“New York is where I was raised and where I’m raising my kids. I’m a proud public-school graduate and a prouder public-school parent. I was given chances I just don’t see for New York’s kids today,” she said in the first campaign video she released on Twitter. “I love New York, I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else, but something has to change […] we are sick of politicians who care more about headlines and power than they do about us.”
One of Nixon’s main reasons for running, she explains, is the inadequacy of New York City’s subway. “Unlike Governor Cuomo, Cynthia Nixon rides the subway every day,” her website reads.
Many New Yorkers and fans of the actress took to Twitter to show their support and share her video, making obvious references to the empowering and inspiring character that defined her career and made women around the world fall in love with New York.
