An evergreen icon, Patek Philippe’s Calatrava Ref 5226G has seen many renditions over the years. The round case easily accommodates any number of complications, while its sleek, clean dial is the canvas for some of Patek’s most creative visual undertakings
The design is in both men’s and women’s references to striking effects. However, this year, the watchmaker takes an all-new approach to the timepiece, with a new dial design and details that bring stark contrast to the traditionally formal design.
The round case of the new Calatrava has a polished bezel and a caseband that features the emblematic hobnail decoration. Inside the 40mm case, fashioned in white gold, is the in-house automatic movement with 45 hours of power reserve. The movement serves the hour, minute, and second hands and the date function. As with all Patek movements, there is a chronometer-certified Patek Philippe Seal stamped on the movement.
Those familiar with Patek’s designs might notice similarities between the new Calatrava and the Calatrava Pilot. The watchmaker has taken design notes from the latter, using Arabic numerals for this timepiece.
However, the similarities seem to end there. The syringe style hands track across a textured lacquered dial in charcoal grey. The hands and numerals are painted in a beige, matching the minute track, date, and logo at noon. These design elements come together to create a rich, vintage look that seems to have captured the hearts of collectors and watch fans over the past few years.
The piece is completed with the option of a tan nubuck leather strap or a black leather strap with fabric embossing.
