On Wednesday morning Ashley Graham became the first plus-size model ever to walk in a Michael Kors’ show.
Kors is known for promoting inclusive representations of beauty, working with young women like Zendaya, to legendary icons like 42-year-old Carolyn Murphy, who closed his 2016 show. For Kors, homogeneous, mannequin like models are ‘incredibly boring’, and he seeks to find each woman’s individuality, ‘if I know them well, I actually put them in clothes I think they would want to wear.’
Graham’s appearance in his latest show was a surprise to the fashion world, as just last season he told USA Today that having plus size models would be a logistics nightmare, ‘I would have to have a football stadium filled with clothes’. But the designer found a way, and Graham walked in a black, belted knit dress and grey fur jacket.
The supermodel, who made history when she appeared on the cover of American Vogue‘s March issue, the first plus model to do so in the magazine’s 125-year run, also made headlines in 2016 when she graced the cover of Sports Illustrated’s coveted Swimsuit Issue.
