A personality that’s larger than life and with a reputation that’s bigger than her home state of Texas, Annie Clark – known to the world as St. Vincent – is a powerful woman. She’s a guitar-slinging musician, a breaker of hearts, fragile, fierce, independent and deep.
She prioritises ingenuity, skill and avant-gardism over her architectural jaw and translucent skin. She’s a titan and a worthy representative of Tiffany & Co.In performance, she adopts a character that allows her to experiment. In Britain, the former Berklee College of Music drop-out has been referred to as the “female Bowie”.After playing with The Polyphonic Spree and touring with Sufjan Stevens, Clark launched a solo career as St. Vincent. Guitar-driven, her sound referenced popular music from the left-of-centre. Her style is redolent of Talking Heads’ icon David Byrne, with whom she recorded Love This Giant and toured in 2012.More recently, Clark dropped a single called New York in June, and is about to release a new album (it’s three years since last one, “St Vincent”, which was her fifth) with producer Jack Antonoff, who has co-written and produced for both Lorde and Taylor Swift.
The 34-year-old has stratospheric dating habits, too. She partnered both British actress and supermodel Cara Delevigne for more than a year and then hooked-up with American actress and Chanel it girl Kristen Stewart. And then there’s her hair – blonde, grey, lavender, black, curled, bobbed, shaved – in as many iterations as her musical persona. Now the illustrious jeweller gets its 21st-century Audrey Hepburn in the shape of Clark as a face for its #KnotOnMyLife campaign in support of Save the Elephants, which sees elephant charms selling in stores and through Net-a-Porter, all the proceeds of which go to the Elephant Crisis Fund in support of combatting poaching, trafficking and the trade in ivory.
