The new decade kicked off with the much-anticipated first ceremony of award season: the Golden Globe Awards. According to tradition, Hollywood’s biggest stars gathered at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles to celebrate the best in moves and television.
The ceremony made world headlines for the irreverent – and at times brutal – opening monologue by host Ricky Gervais, who made fun of pretty much everyone in Hollywood, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Joe Pesci, and of course, for the extravagant red carpet fashion.
So, without further ado, let’s focus on the most exciting thing about award season. Here are our picks for the best and worst dressed at this year’s ceremony.
BEST
Billy Porter
The King of the Red Carpet aka Billy Porter, went all-in with his white feathers and all-white tuxedo designed by Alex Van Assche. He also paired the look with a pair of Jimmy Choo boots and Tiffany & Co. jewellery.
Porter’s outfit is angelic – from the perfectly tailored tuxedo to the grand feathery wings and sparkling accessories, it’s absolutely unforgettable.
Reese Witherspoon
Despite its simplicity, we absolutely loved Witherspoon’s Roland Mouret’s gown accessorised with Tiffany & Co. jewellery. She looked fresh and elegant – as usual. The chic look was wrapped up by her slight flip straight hairstyle.
Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson definitely stood out from the crowd with her crimson custom-made gown from Vera Wang that she completed her with Bulgari white diamonds.
With the v-neck gown that successfully flattered her hourglass figure and the tied-up hair that perfectly showed her neckline, Johansson was absolutely gorgeous and alluring.
Joey King
Probably one of the most striking look of the night – Joey King rocked her red carpet look by wearing a black and white illusional Iris Van Herpen dress with white Jimmy Choo heels and Harry Winston jewellery.
While some said she looked bizarre, we give her outfit a 10 out of 10. From the spiral-like sleeves to the abstract lines and patterns, the dress definitely has a wow factor.
WORST
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett opted for a Mary Katrantzou pastel yellow gown, Pomellato jewellery and Stuart Weitzman high heels.
While Blanchett always looks stunning and has a unique and contagious charm, the embroidered bralette and Swarovski crystal all over her chest, coupled with a “wavy” texture and (a lot of) volume, didn’t quite work.
The back of her dress even made a Twitter user think of potato chips – and we can’t blame her.
Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron opted for a rather unusual colour. The risk, however, did not pay off.
The one-shoulder neon green gown with a black cape custom-made by Dior, definitely flattered Theron’s perfect figure, but didn’t work as a memorable red carpet look.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow wore a tulle Fendi gown and she styled the look with Bulgari jewellery.
Although the sheer gown allowed her to show off her perfect physique, the unflattering colour of the frock disparaged her look for the night. Maybe we’re not quite ready for post-modern Victorian-eaque transparencies?
