If you love the deep blue and want to learn more about how we can all play a part in conserving it, you’ll want to stay up tonight for World Oceans Day 2021. Marked annually on 8 June 2021 by the United Nations, this year’s event features the theme “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods” and will be celebrated online at unworldoceansday.org.
Presented by Blancpain and La Mer, and produced by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations, in partnership with non-profit organization Oceanic Global, this year’s virtual event takes place on 8 June 2021 at 10am to 5pm EST (that’s 10pm to 5am for those of us in Hong Kong).
Through a packed program featuring over 40 thought-leaders, celebrities, partners, entrepreneurs and cross-industry experts, the schedule includes talks on humanity’s relationship with the ocean by Dr. Sylvia Earle of Mission Blue, our underwater world by Jean-Michel Cousteau of Ocean Futures Society, unveiling of the eighth annual UN World Oceans Day photo competition winners and ends with a concert for the ocean featuring Angelique Kidjo, Valerie June, EARTHGANG and Seun Kuti & Egypt 80.
Aside from tuning into the virtual event tonight, there are plenty of ways to get directly involved in sustainability efforts. Think about reducing your single-use plastic consumption, swapping your disposable masks for reusable ones, and supporting brands that support ocean conservation like La Mer.
Get involved with Hong Kong organisations like A Plastic Ocean to fight plastic pollution in the ocean, Ocean Park Conservation Foundation and EcoDrive Hong Kong to see how you can lend your help. And of course, choose to consume less or sustainable seafood options whenever possible.
