Watches and Wonders 2022: Rolex brings substantial updates to three of its flagship models

Mar 31, 2022

The most anticipated launches during Watches and Wonders are no doubt novelties from Rolex. The watchmaker gives the Air-King a facelift, presents a new precious metal iteration for the Day-Date 40 and a left-hand rendition of the GMT-Master II

The simple, no-fuss three-hands Air-King has long been a favourite of Rolex purists. The green seconds hand has become an instantly recognisable signature of the reference. This year, the watchmaker redesigned the case and added crown guards to the design, enhancing the watch’s athlete appeal.

The watch runs on the Rolex Calibre 3230; its power reserve propels the hour, minute and second hands for up to 70 hours. The redesigned stainless steel case now measures 40 mm, 0.8 mm than the previous generation, and is fitted with an Oyster bracelet and an Oysterlock clasp.

Another timepiece measuring 40mm that’s been reimagined is the Day-Date 40. The iconic president’s watch is presented with a platinum fluted bezel for the first time. Previously available only in precious alloys, yellow gold, Everrose gold, and white gold, the platinum reference is a welcomed addition to the family.

Featuring an ice-blue dial previously seen in the likes of the Daytona, the calendar watch is paired with a President bracelet and the sleek Crown clasp.

Perhaps one of the most unexpected launches from Rolex this year, the GMT-Master II sees an all-new left-hand iteration. It features a crown on the left rather than the right side of the case- this design has traditionally been popular among left-handed individuals who prefer to wear their watches on their right wrist. The date aperture finds a home at the nine o’clock position, the opposite side of the dial where it usually appears.

The travel timer displays the local and reference times with its central hour and 24-hour hands. The GMT hand coincides with the 24-hour Cerachrom bezel insert in black and green.

An Oyster bracelet in stainless steel completes the timepiece.
