What to Eat at Taste of Hong Kong
Feb 24, 2017
Taste of Hong Kong returns to the Central Harbourfront for its second year, bringing together the city’s top restaurants, artisan producers and suppliers and creating a playground for the epicurious.
The choices are almost* overwhelming, with thirteen of Hong Kong’s culinary stars serving up over 50 dishes, so you’ll need to come hungry and come with a plan. While the full list of dishes hasn’t been released yet, we’ve had a peek and our mouths are already watering. Here are our five favourites that you need to put at the top of your itinerary.
First Thing is First
Make a b-line for Kei Restaurant, presented by Taste the World with Etihad Airways. Japanese chef Kobayashi, a protégé of Alain Ducasse, helms the kitchen of this Parisian favourite. Try his gnocchi with black truffle and Iberico ham, made especially for Taste of Hong Kong, and start your culinary journey off with something truly special — you won’t be able to try anywhere else in the world.
Round Two
The darling of 2016, Rhoda, is serving up their honest home cooking and you won’t want to miss it. We’ll be going for the wild Hereford ox heart tartare with egg yolk puree- a perfect dish to share, if that’s what you’re into. The beautiful orange yolk binds the meat, adding an extra level of richness.
Third Time is The Charm
Take a ‘break’ with a slightly lighter dish from Kaum, Potato Head Hong Kong’s Indonesian restaurant. Their belut sambal hijau, a pan fried eel fillet topped with grilled cherry tomatoes, green chilli and a green tomato relish, achieves that elusive harmony of sweet and spicy.
Fancy Number Four
Find Tosca, the Ritz Carlton’s glitzy Italian restaurant and get one of their signature dishes: octopus, Amalfitan lemon mayonnaise and parsley salad. The stunning dish is presented like a work of art, bursting with flavour. A great opportunity to try this iconic restaurant if you’re not one for casually popping to the hotel’s 102-floor.
Sweet Finish
If you make it this far, you should reward yourself with Mercato’s housemade ricotta and strawberry jam. Three Michelin starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichte is known for embracing the simple elegance of Italian cuisine, combining local and Italian ingredients to create his vibrant dishes. Served with crisp breadsticks, it’s an exciting, and mildly addicting, combination of flavours and textures.
*There is never too much choice where food is concerned.
