They say sex sells and cosmetic companies have taken that mantra to heart. With names that range from lightly racy and heavily raunchy, David Ho takes a look at the makeup brands with some sexy and scandalous products
Nars
We’ll start the list with a product that was scandalous during its time, but now seems almost demure compared to the others on this list. Released in 1999, Nars’ original Orgasm blush was meant to evoke the flushed afterglow one gets post-coitus. With a bit of scandal driven marketing and great user reviews, the pinky peach blush with shimmer became such a staple for the brand that future collections were based around it. Though Nars has tried to repeat the success with Climax mascara and Deep Throat blush, Orgasm blush has remained a hero product for the company, as it still accounted for 23 percent of sales volume in the US and 7 percent globally as of 2023. With a high that’s lasted from 1999 till now, that sure is one long orgasm…
Northside Princess
Rapper Sexyy Red has just launched her Northside Princess beauty brand. The first product from her company is a line of lip gloss called Sexyy Gloss, which comes in eight different shades: Coochie Juice, Bootyhole Brown, Nut, Pussyhole Pink, Yellow Discharge, Gonorrhea, Blue Ballz and Sex On My Period. It’s perfect as a gift for grandma or as a stocking stuffer for the next Secret Santa at church.
Jeffree Star Cosmetics
Internet personality and beauty mogul Jeffree Star has just released the followup to Orgy, the nude makeup line that was out in 2020. Imaginatively titled Orgy 2, this new palette has 30 uniquely stunning shades representing all things neutral, equally divided into 15 mattes and 15 metallics. There is a new lip formula launching with this collection, called Lip Arousal. Starr’s first ever plumping lip gloss comes in four shades: Clear Headed, Fluffer, Versatile, and Craving Chocolate.
The original Orgy collection featured eye-shadow shades with even more controversial names. These include: Gender Fluid, Top, Bottom, Versatile, Cunnilingus, Safe Sex, Money Shot, and I’m Coming. The darkest shade in the collection is named Glory Hole. It pays to look good, even if through a hole I guess.
Thorne By Bella
Former Disney star Bella Thorne pulled out all the stops to promote her 2018 Thorne By Bella makeup drop.Videos for the provocatively named lip products depict her straddling a chocolate fountain and covered in whipped cream for Sexual Chocolate, running toy firetrucks down her body for Fuck Me Firetruck, or showing a number of models sucking on phallic looking fruit and vegetables for DSL (dick sucking lips). We love a wholesome ad campaign!
Shiro Cosmetics
This one might be as puzzling as it is provocative. Back in 2014, Japanese brand Shiro Cosmetics released five lip glosses in celebration of actor Nicholas Cage’s 50th birthday. The line depicted Cage in drag through five different eras of American history. The lengthy names for each gloss are: Nic Cage Churning Butter One Crisp Thanksgiving Morn, Nic Cage Nibbling Petit Fours in a Posh Victorian Tearoom, Nic Cage Posing for a Calendar with Shiny Bright Red Cars, Nic Cage Doing the Charleston in a Bustling Speakeasy, and Nic Cage Getting Funky with that Saturday Night Fever.
Each shade also came with a demented story to match. Here’s the copy for Nic Cage Getting Funky with that Saturday Night Fever: “The invention of the disco ball came about one night after Nic Cage, at the tender age of five, accidentally sat on a mirror. The shards stuck to his bum and reflected the lasers which happened to be around, throwing off glorious scatterings of multicolored light which made everyone want to dance. Unfortunately, the name “Nicso ball” did not stick. Super sheer purple with bright orange sparkle. Flavored like grape candy, Lip Smackers style!”
