Rapper M.I.A launches fashion line for conspiracy theorists

M.I.A has started Ohmni Wear, a clothing line that promises to block electromagnetic waves from entering the body. David Ho looks at the Paper Planes hitmaker and former Madonna collaborator’s intriguing fashion venture

The new fashion label seems to be targeting conspiracy theorists looking to foil invasive electromagnetic fields (EMF) from entering their bodies. With promises to block “WiFi, 4G, and 5G from reaching your brain” and “100% brain coverage”, the line carries everything from tin foil hats and ponchos to dump bags and boxers that protect fertility.

As for the science behind it, Ohmni claims that their products are made using “the highest purity copper and silver metals. The high conductivity of these metals deflect EMF at up to 99.999% effectiveness, offering you maximum protection.”

Without citing specific sources, the label stated that “multiple studies and meta-analyses” have found that EMF exposure can lead to “higher rates of male infertility, increased risk of glioma (malignant tumours), and an increased risk of miscarriage in pregnant women.”

On their website, the label states that this is “not your artist foray into fashion. This is a necessity.” Serious words indeed, much like its mission statement. “You might think of the war zone as far away from where you are, yet in 2024, even your house is a digital battlefield,” the statement reads. “Future backwards is R U TUF. If the conspiracy theorists are wrong, good for you, you own some beautiful clothes made with pure silver and precious metals. But, if they are right, you just might have saved the future of humanity.”

Fittingly, M.I.A launched the clothing line on InfoWars, the platform of Alex Jones, an American far-right radio show host and conspiracy theorist. In an interview, the Sri Lankan-British artist explained to Jones that the clothing line is designed to protect wearers from nanoparticles, which she referred to as “evil dust”.

In 2022, M.I.A had questioned why Jones was fined $965 million in defamation damages for claiming that the Sandy Hook massacre never happened, while advocating for celebrities that promoted vaccines to be punished similarly.

M.I.A had been vocal about being anti-vaccine early on in the pandemic. “If I have to choose the vaccine or chip I’m gonna choose death,” she wrote on X, previously known as Twitter, in March 2020. “Most of science is in bed with business. Business is in bed with banks, banks are in bed with tech, techs in bed with us, we’re in bed with corona. Corona is in bed with science. So on … the best is prevention.”

As bonkers as it seems, this new fashion line seems very much in line with the vibe that the retired rapper is leaning into these days.
