This year, it’s going to be 15 years since the romantic film The Notebook, based on Nicholas Spark’s 1996 novel of the same name, was released. It instantly became a global hit. To this day, the bittersweet – and at time ultra-dramatic – love story starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, is one of the most loved romantic films of the century. It is also a symbol of a generation.
To celebrate the anniversary, Broadway recently announced that the movie will be adapted into a musical.
Ingrid Michaelson, a well-known singer and songwriter, will be composing the musical.
“When I was approached about working on ‘The Notebook,’ I had to excuse myself and go to the bathroom and cry and come back into the meeting,” she told Variety. “I have loved the movie and the story for so many years now that the idea of turning it into a musical overwhelmed me. The concept of unending devotion and love wrapped up in memory and family is something very close to my own personal life. The story sings to me so perfectly. I actually started writing that very night of the first meeting, before I even had the job! I cannot wait for the world to hear these characters come to life in a musical way.”
Broadway also revealed that theatrical producer Kevin McCollum and actor Kurt Deutsch will work as producers and collaborate with Sparks and playwright Bekah Brunstetter, who will be writing the adaptation.
The New York Times Best Selling Author took to his Twitter and Instagram to share his excitement for the upcoming project. He said that he is thrilled to be working with everyone to bring The Notebook back to life as a musical.
