Award-winning, London-based interior designer Katharine Pooley gives advice on how to style your own inspiring home office. “There are new ways we’re all working, and making small changes will make big differences. Personalising your space goes a long way, such as adding in things and trinkets that make you happy,” Pooley says.

From adding statement lamps to having a sculptural desk chair, here are some of her top tips to make working from home something to look forward to.

Make it personal

“Make your space your own by adding some artwork, framed photos, flowers, objects you associate with happy memories. Even though you are working, this is your home – make it feel happy.”

Add a statement lamp

“A statement lamp is the easiest way to make your desk look more elegant.”

Bronze and gold accents

“These accents will work well with soft neutrals to instantly freshen your work area.”

Uplifting screensavers

“Update your screensaver to something beautiful and uplifting. Seasonal flowers work really well – just update them every week and move with the season.”

Roman blinds for smaller rooms

“For a smaller room, opt for Roman blinds rather than curtains. Maximise your natural light and use a large scale patterned fabric to add character.”

Sculptural desk chair

“A sculptural desk chair adds a touch of glamour – fluted upholstery or metal tacking both work well.”

Touch of leather

“A beautiful leather desk set and new stationary gives an elegant and ready-to-do-business vibe.”

Frames and family

“Aesthetically, chic frames add a depth of colour, while photos of your family and friends will bring a smile to your face and will give you motivation.”

Jars of sweets

“Always have jars of colourful sweets on your desk. They offer a much-needed sugar lift and brightens up your desk beautifully.”

Natural light

“If you have a small space, find a spot next to the window, it’s much better than facing a wall. And take this chance to get some Vitamin D from the sun!”
