Hong Kong's beloved vintage watch brand Octo makes a comeback

Jul 18, 2024

In an unexpected twist of horological nostalgia, Octo watches (not to be confused with Bulgari’s Octo watches), once a beloved timepiece brand that held the limelight in Hong Kong from the 1960s to 1980s, is experiencing a remarkable resurgence in the city. This revival is not just a fleeting trend but a testament to the enduring appeal of vintage aesthetics and the city’s deep-rooted appreciation for its industrial heritage. Hill Choi Lee delves into the history of Octo and why as a watch brand, it retains its prestige

During its heyday, Octo was synonymous with reliability and style in Hong Kong’s bustling watch market. The brand’s popularity was so profound that it became an integral part of the city’s cultural fabric, adorning the wrists of countless residents. Hong Kong’s award-winning veteran star George Lam (76) was once its ambassador. The cantopop singer-songwriter, actor and music producer was one of the main reasons for Octo’s stellar rise in the city in the 80s.

Today, a new generation of watch enthusiasts is rediscovering the charm of Octo’s classic designs. Local watch shops are reporting increased interest in these timepieces, with both collectors and younger consumers drawn to their vintage appeal

Strength in (small) numbers

Its exclusivity however does not lie in its price point – Octo timepieces are relatively affordable compared to luxury watches (being priced around the US$550-$650 mark), however, its rarity is in the number of pieces available. Each model is capped at 200 pieces.

In a remarkable resurgence, Octo with roots stretching back to 1848, has reemerged on the horological scene, seamlessly blending its storied past with contemporary vision. After a period of dormancy, the brand has reignited its legacy, producing timepieces that not only evoke the aesthetic charm of its golden era but also embrace traditional craftsmanship methods.

Octo’s latest offerings capture the essence of vintage timepieces, complete with the tactile and auditory nuances that aficionados cherish. However, this adherence to tradition does not preclude innovation. The company has adeptly positioned itself at the intersection of nostalgia and modernity, creating limited-edition pieces that appeal to a discerning clientele – those with a strong penchant for collectable items.

A bridge between horological heritage and personal legacy

These exclusive timepieces serve as both functional instruments and wearable artefacts, embodying a philosophy that values the artistry of watchmaking as much as its utility. For the select few who acquire an Octo watch, it represents more than a mere accessory; it is a bridge between horological heritage and personal legacy, a tangible connection to both the past and future.

The brand’s comeback is not merely a reproduction of old models but a thoughtful reimagining that blends retro charm with contemporary sensibilities.

This resurgence comes at a time when Hong Kong’s watch market is evolving, with consumers increasingly seeking pieces that tell a story beyond mere timekeeping. Octo watches, with their rich history and connection to the city’s industrial past, offer exactly that – a wearable piece of Hong Kong’s horological heritage.

Interestingly, while Octo’s original designs were known for their longevity, the brand’s attempts to diversify in the 1980s with new lines proved less successful. This historical context adds an intriguing layer to the current revival, as the focus returns to the classic designs that originally captured the city’s heart.

As Hong Kong continues to navigate its place in the global luxury market, the return of Octo watches serves as a reminder of the city’s enduring spirit and its ability to blend tradition with innovation. Whether this comeback will lead to sustained success remains to be seen, but for now, Octo watches are once again finding their place on the wrists of discerning Hong Kongers, bridging generations and keeping time with the city’s ever-evolving narrative.

First pop-up experience in decades

Octo is unveiling its first collection in decades at an exclusive pop-up event in Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, running until August 9th. This summer, the watchmaker has launched a limited-edition collection, with each watch uniquely numbered and never to be reproduced. The pop-up showcases three fresh collections: Ref. 1016 (Automatic Date), Ref. 1119 (Automatic Time-only), and Ref. 3003 (Quartz World-timer). The designs emphasise vintage aesthetics, featuring sharp corners, clean cases, and acrylic crystals for a lighter feel and old-school touch.

Visitors to the pop-up store can explore various watch components, learn about Octo’s history, and enjoy retro-designed photo spots.
