As the men of Europe went to war in 1914, more than 1 million women went to work for the first time. New responsibility gave women new freedom, leading to new ways of dressing, changing silhouettes and social codes. Until November 27, Manchester Art Gallery in England is putting on a show called Fashion & Freedom comprising exhibits inspired by the freedom women won during the First World War. The show includes designs by Holly Fulton, Vivienne Westwood, Emilia Wickstead and Sadie Williams, films by Showstudio and Luke Snellin, and the work of a new generation of fashion designers. “These brilliant fashion designers, film-makers and students bring modern-day sensibility to a landmark moment in women’s history,” says Jenny Waldman, the director of the British programme to mark a century since the Great War. fashionandfreedom.org
