Themes and techniques from the world of abstract art have inspired the fifth high jewellery collection from Chow Tai Fook
Chow Tai Fook’s first Art High Jewellery Collection, Le Labyrinthe Artistique, finds inspiration in influential abstract artists. It is an apt name with a layered maze of movements and changes that takes the owner on an unforgettable journey.
The collection is designed to ignite the imagination and invoke emotion. The details take their lead from the most recognisable abstract techniques that took hold in the early 19th century.
“We have distilled the very essence behind the rhythm of colours, shapes, brushstrokes, size, scale and the aesthetic interpretation of the eye for the masterpieces of abstraction into contemporary expressions of exceptional jewellery design and craftsmanship,” Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Executive Director and art entrepreneur Adrian Cheng said. “Engaging and visually arresting, this collection not only allows us to delve into the world of abstract art, but also gives us a chance to share the exoticism and creative freedom that come with the experience.”
At the heart of abstract art is the concept of deploying colour and form to create the subject of a piece, rather than the piece featuring tangible objects or people. The subject is simplified or reduced to its essential forms, although still allowing the viewer to interpret that it has been derived from something real. The result is a composition that reveals a mysterious beauty.
Each one-of-a-kind set in the collection is dedicated to a different artist, designed to reflect the unique style of each luminary and to acknowledge their contribution to the abstract art period. Think talents the likes of Piet Mondrian, Frank Stella and Wassily Kandinsky.
One of the eye-catching series within the Le Labyrinthe Artistique collection is the Les Blocs de Fantaisie, boasting a design concept based around a sense of order, space creation, colour blocks and linear patterns. Translated to The Blocks of Fantasy, this series draws inspiration from Neo-Plasticism and the De Stijl movement advocated by Dutch artist Piet Mondrian in the early 20th century.
With its vibrant colour blocks and simple but dynamic grid-like patterns, Les Blocs de Fantaisie, pictured right, features a fascinating interplay between positive and negative spaces that dazzles the eyes.
Tourmalines, rubies and sapphires represent the three primary colours, red, blue and yellow, with these complemented by exquisite chalcedony, diamonds and 18k yellow gold. Hollow cut motifs epitomise Mondrian’s signature style, that sees elegant lines and buoyant hues to project a sense of modern chic. Chow Tai Fook’s VIP members can preview the pieces this month and place a bid at the exclusive auction dinner in November.
