To round out the end of a manic year, a star-studded holiday-themed meme has taken off, riffing on the children’s story, Elf on the Shelf, toy elf who is sent by Santa to keep little children on their best behavior in the lead up to Christmas. Parents move the elf around the house to watch over children to create the illusion that he’s keeping careful watch to report back to Santa.

On Instagram, you may have noticed the #myelf and #elfontheshelf hashtags have taken on a life of their own each Christmas season. This year, the viral play on words was started innocently enough with actress and The Real host Garcelle Beauvais who first posted herself sitting atop Pharell’s shoulder, rhyming her first name with Pharell.

“You’ve heard of Elf on a Shelf, now get ready for this…” Beauvais wrote.

It wasn’t long before Hollywood caught on and began building on each other.

Inspired, Pitch Perfect actress Elizabeth Banks placed a small Tom Hanks on her shoulder.

‘Little Fires Everywhere’ actress Reese Witherspoon saw Banks’s post and raised her, “a Grease-on-Reese” with actors John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

And it’s hard to disagree with Ms. Kidman: there is something about seeing all these celebrities have a little holiday fun together that brings a little smile to your face.
