More than 120 works by 90-plus designers are on show at 200 Years of Australian Fashion, an exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne that runs until July 31. This is a significant presentation, the first major survey of its kind, portraying Australian fashion as a by-product of independence and impertinence. Spread over four galleries, the exhibition takes the visitor from the early dressmaking establishments of Brisbane to the mid-19th-century salons of Collins Street to the studios of Bondi. The modern designs on show bear labels such as Dion Lee, Ellery, Romance Was Born and Toni Maticevski.
