Audemars Piguet reveals new versions of the Royal Oak

Jul 08, 2021

Audemars Piguet’s most famous watch gets a makeover in the brand’s newest women’s collection. Several makeovers, in fact. Audemars Piguet’s newest innovation comes in the form of four stunning timepieces. Polished, frosted or bejewelled, these new models combine the classic Royal Oak model with new aesthetics.

First released in 1972, the Royal Oak became the first luxury steel sports watch. It was drawn up by genius watch designer Gérald Genta, a name that watch lovers will be familiar with. In the years that followed, Audemars Piguet went on to release various iterations of the Royal Oak in different styles, but always maintaining its iconic octagonal bezel.

The timepieces in the collection range from sleek and simple, like the Royal Oak Selfwinding in black ceramics, to lavish opulence, like the Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph. Framed by 32 amethysts, the equally purple dial is set against a pink gold case bracelet, giving the timepiece an almost whimsical feel.

High jewellery and haute horlogerie collide in the showstopper of the collection is the Royal Oak Frosted Gold Double Balance Wheel Openworked. It’s just as over the top as it sounds, but beautifully so. The watch face is encircled by multi-coloured gems creating a saturated rainbow. The openworked dial exposes all the inner workings of the timepiece and literally lets you watch as time ticks by.

Topped off with frosted yellow gold for the bracelet, it’s a lot to take in. Sparkling and gleaming, it’s a visually busy watch, the dark and complex dial still manages to offset the luxurious case and bracelet for a balanced look. The case and bracelet come in white gold and yellow gold with a silver-coloured and gold-toned dial respectively.
