Hong Kong Restaurants Win Big at Asia's 50 Best Awards

Feb 22, 2017

Winners take the stage at Asia's Top 50 Restaurants awards

All eyes were on Bangkok last night as Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2017 were announced. The list is compiled by an influential group of 300 industry leaders in Asia, including chefs, critics, restauranteurs and even ‘gastronomes’, selected for their expertise on the area’s restaurant scene.

For the third year running Bangkok’s Gaggan, known for innovative twists on traditional Indian dishes, has secured the top spot, but Hong Kong’s own Amber – helmed by chef Richard Ekkebus, wasn’t far behind at third place. It was also named the Best Restaurant in China.

Cult-classic Ronin, known for its exceptional Japanese food, made its first appearance on the list, while Lung King Heen, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon Hong Kong and the Chairman returned once again. Chef May Chow of local favourite Little Bao, was named Best Female Chef, a title that many hope will allow her an even greater voice as she advocates for LGBT rights.

Perhaps the most significant award of the evening, the Diners Club Lifetime Achievement Award, was given to Chef Umberto Bombana. Bombana’s Hong Kong restaurant, 81/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana— which jumped in the ranks to secure the fourth place spot— is the only Italian restaurant outside of Italy to hold three Michelin stars, an honour it has maintained for six years.
