Never underestimate the power of a great accessory to uplift a look. With the winter months coming, why not infuse a bit of sparkle and dazzle to the comfort cardigans and monochromatic dresses and coats of the season? Here are four key trends from the fall 2020 runways, with ultra-wearable jewellery options from fashion and fine jewellery brands:

Chunky chokers

Glam up your oversized sweater with big, gold necklaces that accentuate the collarbone and add a bit of drama, like these Rokh and Bottega Veneta looks from the Fall 2020 runways. 

Fashion: Bottega Veneta’s chunky rope necklace is crafted in Italy from 18-karat gold-plated silver. A versatile piece that goes with casual T-shirts and dressier cardigans, Alighieri’s The Unreal City choker, inspired by TS Elliot’s 1922 poem The WasteLand, is handmade in London’s Hatton Garden from textured bronze, plated in 24-karat yellow gold and fastened by a chunky lobster clasp. 

Fine: From Los Angeles jeweller Shay comes the Essential gold choker in solid 18-karat gold with a pave setting of white VVS diamonds, weighing 15.8 carats. The clasp is adjustable to suit any neckline. 

Memorable multiples

A trend that works great with turtleneck sweaters and coats, layer extra long pendant necklaces and sautoirs to create depth and lengthen the torso, as seen in this androgynous look from Lanvin’s Fall 2020 Ready-to-Wear collection. 

Fashion: This F for Fendi necklace features three fine chains accented with the F is Fendi logo. The layered mix of gold, palladium and rose gold finished chains creates an easy three-necklace look. 

Fine: Van Cleef & Arpels’ Vintage Alhambra long necklace comes with a total of 20 motifs, handcrafted in yellow gold with diamonds, and can be worn together with shorter versions of the Alhambra. The latest addition to Piaget’s Possession line is this multi-tier pendant necklace in 18K rose gold set with 55 brilliant-cut diamonds, and Dior expands the Rose des Vents range with this Long Necklace in 18k pink gold, diamonds and mother-of-pearl, available worldwide from November 15. 

Pop drops

Draw eyes to the face and lengthen your neck with edgy drop earrings that highlight movement, as seen in these fall looks by Valentino and Chloe. Don’t want the weight? Opt for a single instead of a pair. 

Fashion: Begüm Khan’s Pharaoh Patmos clip earrings have been hand-cast to resemble an exotic beetle. The gold-plated earrings are set with light-reflecting crystals and vibrant turquoise, which move with the wearer. 

Fine: Actress Marion Cotillard has designed seven high jewellery pieces in a capsule collection for Chopard, and among them is this diamond and Fairmined ethical gold earring inspired by the jewellery house’s Ice Cube collection. Part of the Louis Vuitton Volt collection, these earrings are an electric interpretation of the iconic LV initials. Rendered in 18-karat yellow gold, the L is positioned in the earlobe, while the V, in white gold paved with 60 sparkling diamonds, swings from a delicate chain. All the pieces in this collection can be mixed and matched.

Pearl party

The popularity of pearls continues, with runways rife with modern and edgy variations of the trend, like this layered pearl and crystal necklace from Sacai Fall 2020, and this oversized gemstone and pearl earring at Prabal Gurung. 

Fashion:  Mixed materials create a lot of buzz and Chanel’s multi-tier necklace in metal, pearls and calfskin as well as Erdem’s black and white Art Deco-inspired necklace with faux pearls, grey crystals would spice up any monochromatic ensemble. 

Fine: A sculptural take on the classic pearl necklace, Mateo’s earrings come in 14K gold shaped in an elongated hoop. A great match with a leather jacket.
