Christian Dior’s travelling Designer of Dreams exhibition is making its first-ever trip to the Middle East this year. The couture house kickstarts their tour by lighting up the Chengdu sky, covering the Tianxi Twin Towers in a riot of silver and red light to promote their fashion exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art
Launched in Paris in 2017, the exhibition has since graced the halls of museums in London, Shanghai and New York. In each location, the exhibition is uniquely tailored to incorporate local culture into its display. In the Chengdu exhibit, there is a special wall dedicated to “Dior in China” designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri. The China display is accentuated by international dresses and silhouettes inspired by Spain, Mexico, Kenya and Egypt celebrating the global lens of fashion.
The history of Dior as a whole also travels around the world. From short trips to Christian Dior’s childhood home in Normandy to the busy Paris office where creative directors (the late) Yves Saint Laurent, Raf Simons and Chiuri made their home. Or longer journeys linked by red carpet events, where the likes of Princess Diana and Zhang Ziyi donned the iconic brand.
Doha, Qatar is the latest in a long line of cities to host the exhibition. The exhibition will land in the Qatari capital late this year, just in time to celebrate Dior’s 75th anniversary.
With every new year the show should expand to new locations around the world. Consequently, allowing the brand to share its history as it has shared its designs over the decades.
The Christian Dior Designer of Dreams exhibition will run in the MOCA Chengdu until September 7 and open in Doha’s M7 Art Center starting November 2021 to March 2022.
